Brief history of Bakelite: According to Wikipedia,
Bakelite materials AKA “Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride“ , was the beginning of original plastic made from synthetic components. It was developed in 1907 by Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York.
A synthetic plastic became revolutionary for anything that needs the properties of electrical nonconducting and heat-resistant, such as for for housewares, electrical insulation,radio-telephone cases, diversified kitchenwares, pipe stems, toys, even firearms/rifles, fashion jewelry etc. 1930s, Bakelite costume jewelry was the highest point in popularity, featured in many fashion magazines., looking fabulous for less from a pocket book.
In the modern world, old vintage Bakelite jewelries have become the vintage retro appealing, well thought after by many fashionable collectors.
There are many reasons for me to collect Bakelite jewelries whom financially possible, such as 1. gorgeous photographs in 1930s Art Deco Magazine,2. They are fun to wear in any fashionable attire,3. It is Not flexible, and very hard , but smooth and comfortable wear for a long time4. they retains their original molded and characteristic shapes,5. they are heat-resistant, not feeling hot for wearing long period of time,6. Scratch-resistant, I don’t have to worry too much about rubbing against something,7 It is electric current resistant . It is a good investment for someone likes fun, non metal fashionable jewelries as they have been considered as destructive resistant, durable, bold, bulky and beautiful, but yet Not too heavy. The older they gets, they will be increased in value as the popularity seems to be consistently continuing.
I don’t care for regular modern plastic jewelries, they look old and scratched too quickly. The next best thing, I would say resin and acrylic jewelries, are very affordable , but I have to say, after wearing Bakelite jewelries, it is hard to wear any other heavy weight costume jewelry.

The month in the Spring 2020 issue of the Pioneer Woman Magazine , Ree Drummond had an article about Bakelite. I believe she featured this similar bangle bracelet in that issue. Today, Bakelite costume jewelry items are not sold at jewelry counters at the department stores, not because they are no longer popular, but because they are no longer affordable price. Bakelite jewelry items are considered collectible, only available in auctions or Etsy store, definitely. Lol. In fact, they are very well sought after by most collectors, as a result, high price tag was added to listing price.

I purchased this piece from vintage boutique in 1985, price tag was reasonable then, but dollars went a long way at that time; I could get a cane of Pepsi for a quarter.
I notice that when I store my Bakelite jewelry in extreme humidity very damp basement, that had been flooded over the years, I noticed that some pieces became slightly swell,so I would recommend to this gorgeous Bakelite bangle bracelet in normal jewelry storage condition. Also, this bangle get rubbed on jean or jean materials to the burnt temperature , it will have a distinctive smell ,such acrid burnt tobacco smell, or sweet fishy order, awful, I would stick with simichrome testing if you want to confirm if you have Bakelite quality piece.
As we all know, Phenolic Smell is awful unpleasant smell.
